Workshop on
AI Rural Health
Monday, March 18, 2024
10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Health Care Engineering Systems Center
CSL Studio - Room 1232
1206 W. Clark Street
Urbana, IL.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the health industry, and rural health is no exception. AI is being used to improve how health institutions communicate with patients, improve operations, and streamline tasks. It has also improved the quality and efficiency of clinical work, in addition to avoiding medical errors. It’s also making products and services more accessible and, in some cases, more affordable to a broader group of patients.
Moreover, the widespread adoption of wearable and smart devices by patients and consumers has created alternatives to healthcare delivery that complement the clinical environment and provide new avenues for improving health outcomes in community and rural health contexts. AI technologies can enable new approaches to leveraging such devices for the purpose of health research and translational impact, by giving patients and participants new tools for improving their health-related behaviors.
This workshop will be a focused meeting to build alliances and collaborations and start the process of creating a research community with common goals. Some potential goals include:
- Identifying a set of challenges, research questions, and problems which could advance the state of rural health if they were addressed
- Creating common infrastructure for conducting health research with rural populations statewide
- Developing collaborative teams that could pursue a variety of funding opportunities
- Developing the healthcare workforce in the state of IL so as to more effectively incorporate AI methods and position practitioners for greater impact
