Twelve undergraduate interns are joining the 2022 Jump ARCHES Summer Internship Program, led by HCESC. The internship pairs students up with project teams led by UIUC faculty and OSF Healthcare/UICOMP researchers that have active Jump ARCHES awards. We've asked each intern to tell us a little about themselves. We'd like to introduce you to Suyash Nagumalli!

Suyash is working with Dr. Girish Deshpande of OSF and HCESC Simulation Engineer Harris Nisar on the Jump ARCEHS project Augmented Reality Base Pre-learning Module for Extra Corporeal Membrane Procedures (ECMO VR). Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a life support technique where an external circulator carries the deoxygenated blood from the patient to an oxygenator, the blood there is enriched with oxygen and carbon dioxide is removed. Patients are put on ECMO if they have a failing heart, lung, or both. Managing patients with ECMO is different from conventional care and requires an in-depth understanding of the cardiovascular, respiratory and ECMO physiology. The goal of this project is to deliver baseline knowledge regarding the complex equipment used to deliver ECMO and how this equipment interfaces with patients using virtual reality simulations.

Suyash will be asked to develop common scenarios that providers must understand such as putting a patient on ECMO, monitoring them while they are on it, and taking them off. He will also be asked to help polish the application, so it is ready for testing. Finally, he will need to document his progress with the hopes of submitting a poster at the end of the summer.

Where are you from?

I am from Hyderabad, India.

What is your major, and why are you interested in studying and working in your field of study?

I’m a rising Junior majoring in Computer Science. I enjoy creating software that makes certain tasks easier, while also working on ideas to extend the benefits of software to others. CS just instantly made sense.

What are you wanting to gain from your experience?

I want to make new connections with people in the research sector, and pick up skills in VR development for me to scope the industry and see what technologies in CS I like.

What kind of work would you like to do in the future?

I’d like to work on something that could reach millions of people. New tech and novel ways of doing things, like how HCSESC is developing VR modules to train healthcare professionals, can potentially have a large-scale impact.

What other plans do you have for the future?

I plan on pursuing a master's, making music and YouTube videos on the side, and specializing in the tech industry in something I enjoy doing.

Do you have any hobbies? Does this activity relate to your studies or influence what you want to do with your future?

I play the piano. I am working on producing and making my own music. I also do want to give Piano lessons so that’s something else for me to think about, outside of my academic pursuits.
