Twelve undergraduate interns are joining the 2022 Jump ARCHES Summer Internship Program, led by HCESC. The internship pairs students up with project teams led by UIUC faculty and OSF Healthcare/UICOMP researchers that have active Jump ARCHES awards. We've asked each intern to tell us a little about themselves. We'd like to introduce you to Kareem Habayeb!

Kareem is working with HCESC Simulation Engineer Anusha Muralidharan and Dr. Praveen Kumar of OSF on the Endotrachial Intubation (ETI) Trainer project.  Endotracheal intubation (ETI) is an airway procedure performed on patients to aid in breathing. The goal of this project is to develop an ETI trainer comprising of a high fidelity manikin and sensorized laryngoscope integrated with an augmented reality (AR) based feedback and visualization system. This simulator will help medical professionals learn intubation skills with quantitative feedback in an interactive environment. As a part of the preliminary work, we have successfully integrated sensors to laryngoscope to measure force applied to airway and hand movements of the user. Kareem will build upon the existing hardware (sensor integration, calibration, data acquisition, and signal processing and user interface design) and finish building the prototype into wireless laryngoscope with data logging capability. In the future, we will use this device to collect data from anesthesiologists and create an expert data mode.

Where are you from?

I'm from Atlanta, Georgia.

What is your major, and why are you interested in studying and working in your field of study?

I'm a rising Junior majoring in Mechanical Engineering and minoring in Computer Science. I'm still exploring my interests, but I know that I want my engineering work to contribute to the betterment of society, either through sustainability or improving human health.

What are you wanting to gain from your experience?

This experience is important to me because it allows me to start exploring my long-standing interest in health care and biomedical engineering. It is an ideal environment to combine my love of design/manufacturing with the programming of microcontrollers and sensors to create a harmonious and efficient system.

What kind of work would you like to do in the future?

I would like to work in robotics or product design and development.

What other plans do you have for the future?

I want to Scuba dive in the Bahamas.

Do you have any hobbies? Does this activity relate to your studies or influence what you want to do with your future?

I like to go Scuba Diving and off-road driving in the deserts of Arabia with my dad. Scuba diving especially reminds me of how fragile our planet is and the need to protect it.
