ACS Regional Poster Competition

American Cancer Society Poster Competition for High School Students of Central Illinois

The American Cancer Society encourages high school students to participate in its annual Poster Competition. The topic for the inaugural poster competition is “Link between Obesity and Cancer”.


The broad theme of the poster must be focused on the effect of obesity on cancer. To start your research, here is link which gives you some background information about this topic:

Preliminary Application Process

To participate in the competition, please submit a 250 word abstract with the following information:

  • Title
  • Name of the author
  • Name of the school
  • Contact information: E-mail ID and Contact Phone Number
  • Abstract (250 words)

Poster Competition

  •  Top 10 finalists will be announced by December 15th, 2017. If your abstract is selected for the presentation, you will be required to bring a poster to the competition that will be held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on January 20, 2018. Easel and pins for mounting the poster will be provided at the site. The poster will be judged by eminent scientists. Each participant will be required to make a two to three-minute presentation to the judges in front of the poster.
  • Posters must measure between 18 and 24 inches high and 24 and 30 inches wide.
  • Posters must be the original design and creation of the entrant.
  • In submitting a poster, students agree that if your poster is selected, you will bring your poster for presentation at an event organized by the ACS on January 20th, 2018. The results may be used in publications and included on its website. The top three winners will win awards and the winning posters will be displayed at Market Place Mall in Champaign, IL.

The final poster must include the following:

  • Title
  • Name of the author
  • Name of the school
  • Abstract (summary of objectives, methods, results, and conclusions)
  • Background Information
  • Project Objectives
  • Scientific Data (such as tables, graphs, charts)
  • Conclusions
  • References
  • Acknowledgements


First Prize: Plaque and a certificate from American Cancer Society
Second Prize: Medal and Certificate
Third Prize: Medal and Certificate

**All participants will get a certificate of participation.
